The Beatles Jubilee

Posted: September 4, 2012 in music, news

On 6 June 1962, as part of their audition at EMI Studios at 3 Abbey Road in London, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison met to record their first single “Love me Do”, with Pete Best on drums. Producer George Martin did not approve of Pete Best’s druming but the decision to fire Best was not his.

Ringo Starr played drums with the Beatles since august at the Cavern Club sessions. Some sources tells Ringo’s first appearance was on 18 August.

On 4 September 1962, Pete Best was replaced with Ringo on drums and on that day the Beatles with Ringo Starr on drums recorded a new version of “Love me Do” at EMI Studios.

There was another “Love me Do” version, recorded on 11 September with session drummer Andy White on drums, as Martin was unhappy with Ringo Starr’s performance and he was relegate to playing tambourine. As the tambourine was not included on the 4 September recording, this is the easiest way to distinguish between the Starr and White recordings. The Andy White version was included on American compilation of the album Rarities and Past Masters, Vol 1. The Pete Best version remained unreleased until 1995, when it was included on the Anthology 1 album.

But what really matters is on that Tuesday 4 September 1962 was born The Beatles as we know them:
John Lennon on rhythm guitar
Paul McCartney on bass guitar
George Harrison on lead guitar
Ringo Starr on drums
