Four days after William Shatner – best known as the Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise James T. Kirk – turned 82, the legendary actor Leonard Nimoy – best known as the half-Vulcan, half-human Mr. Spock in TV series Star Trek – turns 82 today, 26 March. Shatner and Nimoy now shared the same age. Happy B-Day, Mr. Spock!

Leonard Simon Nimoy was born on March 26, 1931, in Boston, Massachusetts, in the West End, to Yiddish-speaking Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Iziaslav, Soviet Union (now Ukraine). Nimoy is four days younger than his Star Trek co-star William Shatner. His father, Max Nimoy, owned a barbershop in the Mattapan section of the city. His mother, Dora Nimoy (née Spinner), was a homemaker. Nimoy began acting at the age of eight in children’s and neighborhood theater. His parents wanted him to attend college and pursue a stable career, or even learn to play the accordion—with which, his father advised, Nimoy could always make a living—but his grandfather encouraged him to become an actor.

Nimoy’s film and television acting career began in 1951, but after receiving the title role in the 1952 film Kid Monk Baroni, a story about a street punk turned professional boxer, he played more than 50 small parts in B movies, television series such as Perry Mason, and Dragnet, and serials such as Republic Pictures’ Zombies of the Stratosphere (1952). To support his family, Nimoy often worked other jobs, such as delivering newspapers in the morning.

In the 50’s, Nimoy appeared in many TV series as The Twilight Zone, Sea Hunt, Highway Patrol, Colt .45 and Wagon Train. Throughout the 1960s, Nimoy appeared in Bonanza, The Rebel, Two Faces West, Rawhide, The Untouchables, The Eleventh Hour, Combat!, Daniel Boone, The Outer Limits, The Virginian, Get Smart and Mission: Impossible. After worked together in Star Trek series, Nimoy and William Shatner first worked together on an episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., “The Project Strigas Affair” (1964). Their characters were from opposite sides of the Iron Curtain. Nimoy first worked with DeForest Kelley – best known as Dr. Leonard McCoy in Star Trek series –  in “Man of Violence”, a season two episode of The Virginian.

Where No Man Has Gone Before

Leonard Nimoy’s greatest prominence came from his role in the original Star Trek series. As the half-Vulcan, half-human Mr. Spock, Nimoy became a star, and the press predicted that he would “have his choice of movies or television series”. He formed a long-standing friendship with William Shatner, who portrayed his commanding officer, saying of their relationship, “we were like brothers”.

Star Trek: The Original Series was broadcast from 1966 to 1969. Nimoy earned three Emmy Award nominations for his work on the iconic program that has defined American television science fiction, both for fans of science fiction, and beyond.

He played the elder Spock in the 2009 Star Trek movie, directed by J. J. Abrams. In April 2010, Leonard Nimoy announced that he was retiring from playing the signature character of Star Trek‘s Spock.

Live long and prosper

Spock’s Vulcan salute became a recognized symbol of the show and was identified with him. Leonard Nimoy created the sign himself from his childhood memories of the way kohanim (Jewish priests) held their hand when giving blessings. During an interview, he translated the Priestly Blessing which accompanied the sign and described it during a public lecture: “May the Lord bless and keep you and may the Lord cause his countenance to shine upon you. May the Lord be gracious unto you and grant you peace. The accompanying spoken blessing, Live long and prosper”.

After Star Trek

In the 70’s, Leonard Nimoy oined the cast of the spy series Mission: Impossible, which was seeking a replacement for Martin Landau. He played the role during the fourth and fifth seasons of the show from 1969 to 1971. He co-starred with Yul Brynner and Richard Crenna in the Western movie Catlow (1971). He also had roles in two episodes of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery (1972 and 1973) and Columbo (1973), and appeared in various made for television films. He received an Emmy Award nomination for best supporting actor for the television film A Woman Called Golda (1982).

Nimoy’s interest in photography began in childhood; he still owns a camera that he rebuilt at the age of 13. His photography studies at UCLA occurred after Star Trek and Mission: Impossible, when Nimoy seriously considered changing careers. His work has been exhibited at the R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton, Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.

i-am-not-spock

Nimoy has written two volumes of autobiography. The first was called I Am Not Spock (1975) and was controversial, as many fans incorrectly assumed that Nimoy was distancing himself from the Spock character. In the book, Nimoy conducts dialogues between himself and Spock. The contents of this first autobiography also touched on a self-proclaimed “identity crisis” that seemed to haunt Nimoy throughout his career. It also related to an apparent love/hate relationship with the character of Spock and the Trek franchise. The second volume, I Am Spock (1995), saw Nimoy communicating that he finally realized his years of portraying the Spock character had led to a much greater identification between the fictional character and himself. Nimoy had much input into how Spock would act in certain situations, and conversely, Nimoy’s contemplation of how Spock acted gave him cause to think about things in a way that he never would have thought if he had not portrayed the character. As such, in this autobiography Nimoy maintains that in some meaningful sense he has merged with Spock while at the same time maintaining the distance between fact and fiction.

Leonard Nimoy has also written several volumes of poetry, some published along with a number of his photographs.

David Eger, a Canadian photographer, has identified famous photographs and then recreated them with Star Wars action figures. Replicating the entire scene in each photograph, David actually recreated them as actual models and photographed them – this is actually part of a 365 project where he would create an image like this one a day for a year:

The Mona Leia

According to David,

“The original Cloned Photos from my 365 Days of Clones were created, taken and edited on the same date as the original photograph or on the birthday of the photographer or artist who created the image. There were; however, many images that I missed, didn’t have the time to create or hadn’t thought about that I have now begun to go back and create in my new series. The photo project began on February 23, 2011 and is ongoing.”

Enjoy this collection of the art of David Eger (with the original that inspired his work at next). Check out for more on his website: http://www.365daysofclones.com/.

Please Please Me, The Beatles’ debut album, was released 50 years ago today

171923 / Television - Yerh Yerh Yerh

On March 22 1963 The Beatles’ released Please Please Me, their first studio album. The release was recorded quickly to capitalise on the success of the single Please Please Me, which had come out two months earlier, and went to number two.  Please Please Me changed the face of modern music, and cemented The Beatles as a phenomenon. At a time when the UK album charts were dominated by film soundtracks and easy listening vocalists, this pop record stayed at number one for 30 weeks in 1963, only to be replaced by the band’s second album, With the Beatles. Of the album’s fourteen songs, eight were written by Lennon–McCartney (originally credited “McCartney–Lennon”). In 2012, Please Please Me was voted 39th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.

Please Please Me original front and back album cover: Photographer Angus McBean was asked to take the distinctive colour photograph of the group looking down over the stairwell inside EMI’s London headquarters in Manchester Square. George Martin was to write later: “We rang up the legendary theatre photographer Angus McBean, and bingo, he came round and did it there and then. It was done in an almighty rush, like the music.

Here are some little-known facts about Please Please Me:

1. The band’s marathon recording session lasted nine hours and 45 minutes, starting at 10am on a Monday morning. This exceeded record producer George Martin’s expectations, who had originally only booked two sessions for the band – they ended up running into a third one in the evening.
2. Twist and Shout, a cover of the Phil Medley and Burt Russell song, was the last track to be recorded because John Lennon had a cold on recording day; Martin feared the song’s challenging vocals would ruin Lennon’s voice for the rest of the recording if it was performed earlier.
3. The total session time cost £400, the equivalent of £10,000 in 2013. Each Beatle was paid £7.50 for each three-hour session.
4. Martin originally wanted The Beatles to pose outside the insect house of London Zoo for the cover of Please Please Me. However the Zoological Society of London refused and the shot ended up being taken over a stairwell inside EMI’s London headquarters.
5. The original vinyl release of Please Please Me is the only Beatles album where the original songs are credited to McCartney-Lennon. Afterwards, including on CD releases of the album, the songs are attributed to Lennon-McCartney.
6. Please Please Me’s sleeve notes were written by the band’s press officer Tony Barrow, and mention The Beatles’ rivals at the time, The Shadows.
7. Please Please Me was not released in America until The Beatles’ catalogue was standardised for CD, in 1987.
8. The album was almost recorded at the Liverpool venue the Cavern, in front of a live audience. However, due to time pressures the EMI studio was booked instead.
9. Please Please Me was nearly called Off the Beatle Track instead, but this changed with the release of the single of the same name.
10. One of the original tracks on the album, Misery, was written for British teen sensation Helen Shapiro to perform, but her producer, Norrie Paramor, turned it down.

BECAUSE WE LOVE BAD GIRLS…

lindsay-lohan-court-01

On this Monday, 18 March, Lindsay Lohan accepted a plea deal in a misdemeanour car crash case that includes 90 days in a rehabilitation facility. The actress, who has struggled for years with legal problems, pleaded no contest to reckless driving, lying to police and obstructing officers who were investigating the accident involving the actress in June. A judge said Lohan will be sentenced to 90 days in rehab, 30 days of community labour and 18 months of psychological therapy. Before the Mean Girls actress left the courtroom, Superior Court Judge James R. Dabney offered her a suggestion:

“Don’t drive,” he said.

lindsay-lohan-court-02Lohan was on probation when her sports car crashed on Pacific Coast Highway while on her way to a film shoot. The 26-year-old actress has been repeatedly sentenced to jail since 2007 when she was twice arrested for driving under the influence. A hearing had been set to begin at 8:30 a.m., and Lohan arrived after 9 a.m. She looked slightly frazzled in a cream-coloured ensemble. Lohan reportedly missed her original Sunday night flight from New York to Los Angeles, instead travelling on a private plane provided by a Los Angeles-based energy drink company for which she has made promotional appearances. Lohan has resolved her numerous court problems without ever going to trial. Instead she has faced judges who have sentenced her to rehab and counselling, which even her current attorney acknowledges have not completely helped the troubled actress. The former Disney star has been under some form of probation since 2007, and her court troubles have stifled a once-promising career.

SOME MOVIES, MANY MANY TROUBLES…

Lindsay Morgan Lohan (born Lindsay Dee Lohan on July 2, 1986) is an American actress, fashion designer, model and recording artist. She began her career as a child fashion model when she was three, and was later featured on the soap opera Another World for a year when she was 10. At age 11, Lohan made her motion picture debut in Disney’s remake of “The Parent Trap” (1998), a critical and commercial hit.

lindsay-lohan-child-02

Her next motion picture, Disney’s remake of “Freaky Friday” (2003), was also a success at the box office and with critics. With the release of “Mean Girls” (2004), another critical and commercial success, Lohan became a household name and a frequent focus of paparazzi and tabloids. Lohan’s debut studio album, “Speak” (2004), was certified platinum. Her second album, “A Little More Personal” (Raw) (2005), was certified gold.

lindsay-lohan-youngEarlier in 2005, Lohan starred in Disney’s “Herbie: Fully Loaded”, another box office success. In 2006, she received positive comments on her work in independent films, including Robert Altman’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and Emilio Estevez’s “Bobby”. In 2007, two driving under the influence incidents led to Lohan being put on probation, and together with three visits to rehabilitation facilities caused the loss of several movie deals. In 2008 and 2009, Lohan worked as a fashion model and launched the clothing line 6126. She resumed her acting career with recurring appearances in the TV series “Ugly Betty” in 2008 and starred in the TV film “Labor Pains” in 2009.

She was featured in Robert Rodriguez’s feature film “Machete” (2010). She spent much of 2010 and 2011 entangled in legal problems stemming from probation violations and a necklace theft. After her supervised probation was lifted in 2012, she did further television work, including starring as Elizabeth Taylor in the biographical TV film “Liz & Dick” (2012).

HERBIE: FULLY LOADED

In 2006, Lohan attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. In January 2007, Lohan admitted herself to the Wonderland Center rehabilitation facility. Lohan checked out on February 16, 2007 after completing a 30-day stay. Lohan was then cast in the film “Poor Things”. On May 26, four days before production was set to start, she lost control of her car and ran it up a curb. After receiving treatment for minor injuries, she was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI.) The film’s producers initially voiced support and production was put on hold as Lohan entered the Promises Treatment Center rehabilitation facility where she stayed for 45 days. Upon her release to outpatient care, Lohan was voluntarily fitted with a SCRAM bracelet to monitor her sobriety. On July 24, three weeks before filming was scheduled to resume on “Poor Things”, Lohan refused a field sobriety test and was taken to a police station where her blood alcohol level was found to be above the legal limit. The police also found a small amount of cocaine in her pocket. She was booked on charges of possession of cocaine, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license. In August Lohan entered the Cirque Lodge Treatment Center in Sundance, Utah for a third stint at rehabilitation, staying for three months until discharge in October. Ultimately Lohan was replaced in the Poor Things production. Hollywood executives and industry insiders commented that it would be difficult for Lohan to find employment until she could prove that she was sober and reliable, citing possible issues with securing insurance.

lindsay-lohan-machete-poster

On August 23, 2007, Lohan pleaded guilty to misdemeanor cocaine use and driving under the influence and was sentenced to one day imprisonment and 10 days community service. She was also ordered to pay fines and complete an alcohol education program, and was given three years probation. Lohan released a statement in which she said “it is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs.” On November 15, 2007, Lohan served 84 minutes in jail. In October 2009 Lohan’s DUI probation was extended by an additional year, following several instances in which she failed to attend the court-ordered substance abuse treatment classes.

lindsay-lohan-as-elizabeth-taylor

In May 2010 Lohan traveled to the Cannes Film Festival to promote the biographical drama Inferno, in which she was set to star as the lead, adult-film performer Linda Lovelace. While she was in court mandated rehab in November, it was announced that Lohan would be replaced by another actress. Because she was in Cannes, Lohan missed a mandatory DUI progress hearing. A bench warrant was issued for her arrest which was rescinded after she posted bail. Lohan was ordered to attend alcohol education classes, wear an alcohol-monitoring bracelet, and undergo random drug tests to remain free on bail. At a July 6 hearing, the judge determined that Lohan had violated the terms of her probation by missing several mandatory classes and meetings. She was sentenced to 90 days in jail followed by 90 days of inpatient rehab treatment. Lohan served only 14 days of the jail sentence, between July 20 and August 2, due to overcrowding. She then entered an inpatient rehabilitation facility, from where she was released after only 23 days. She was ordered to submit to random drug and alcohol screenings and attend therapy.

lindsay-lohan-16

On September 24, 2010, Lohan’s probation was revoked following a failed drug test. A few days later she entered the Betty Ford Center, a drug and alcohol treatment center, where she remained on court order for three months until early January 2011. On February 9, 2011, Lohan was charged with the theft of a necklace reported stolen from a jewelry store in January. She was sentenced to 120 days in jail and 480 hours of community service for misdemeanor theft and probation violation, to which she pled no contest. She was also ordered to remain under supervised probation until the completion of her community service. Due to jail overcrowding, Lohan served the sentence under house arrest wearing a tracking ankle monitor for 35 days between May 26 and June 29. In November Lohan was found to have violated the terms of her probation by failing to perform the required community service. She was sentenced to 30 days of jail and 400 hours of community service. On November 7, Lohan spent less than five hours in jail due to overcrowding. On March 29, 2012, Lohan’s supervised probation ended after she completed the required community service and therapy. She will still be on informal probation for the necklace theft until May 2014, with the only requirement to follow the law.

lindsay-lohan-21

In the early hours of the morning on November 29 2012, Lindsay Lohan was arrested and charged with third-degree assault for allegedly striking a Florida woman in a Manhattan nightclub. Later that day, Lohan was charged with lying to police, obstructing an officer, and reckless driving stemming from a car crash earlier that year in Santa Monica in which police determined she lied by telling them her assistant was driving at the time of the car accident. On December 15, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge revoked Lohan’s probation due to new charges being filed against her. On March 18, 2013, Lohan pled no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and providing false information to a police officer. She was sentenced to 90 days in a lockdown rehabilitation center, 30 days of community service, and 18 months of mandated psychotherapy. A 180 day jail sentence in connection with the violation of probation was stayed.

By the way, don’t worry, LiLo, I love you. I will always love you.

MARILYN OBSESSION

Photographer Bert Stern may best be known as the photographer who shot Marilyn Monroe’s famous last sitting, a collection of vulnerable and beautiful shots of the actress, taken at the Bel Air hotel in 1962. The photographs are arguably the most famous images ever captured of America’s most famous actress. Six weeks after she had posed, Monroe was found dead of an apparent barbiturate overdose. As most anyone alive now already knows, New York Magazine’s Feb 2008 issue features Lindsay Lohan recreating the shoot now known as “Marilyn’s Last Sitting”, again shot by photographer Bert Stern.

For the January/February 2012 issue of Playboy magazine, Lindsay Lohan once again emulated the legendary actress in the pin-up poses originally struck by Marilyn for the 1953 issue of Playboy. Shot by photographer Yu Tsai, LiLo replicates some of Marilyn’s 1953 poses for the magazine and adds a few more.
