On this day August 19, World Photography Day, my respect and admiration for all photographers and videographers who risk their lives during the coverage of the protests in Brazil, as well as the heroic war correspondents who work in conflicts around the globe.
Neste dia 19 de Agosto, Dia Mundial da Fotografia, o meu respeito e admiração a todos os fotógrafos e cinegrafistas que arriscam a vida durante as coberturas dos protestos no Brasil, assim como os heróicos correspondentes de guerra que atuam nos conflitos ao redor do planeta.
Dozens of photographers, videographers and journalists are being beaten during demonstrations so they do not show the violent actions of the Military Police. Many are being injured and arrested, or having their equipment destroyed or seized to prevent the recorded images of the police violence of being disclosed through the media. Meet some of these professionals arrested, wounded or maimed for trying to show society the truth about Brazilian democracy.
Dezenas de fotógrafos, cinegrafistas e jornalistas estão sendo agredidos durante as manifestações para que eles não mostrem as ações violentas da Polícia Militar. Muitos estão sendo feridos e presos, ou tendo o seu equipamento destruído ou apreendido para que as imagens registradas por eles da violência policial não sejam distribuídas através da mídia. Conheça alguns desses profissionais presos, feridos ou mutilados por tentarem mostrar à sociedade a verdade sobre a democracia brasileira.
Reporter Giuliana Vallone
The reporter Giuliana Vallone, TV Folha, was hit in the eye by a rubber bullet fired by military police from ROTA (Rounds Ostensive Tobias de Aguiar) while covering the protest against the increase in bus tariffs in São Paulo June last year. She told that she was in a parking lot on Augusta street when a ROTA car approached at low speed and a military police officer who was in the backseat fired on her. According to Folha, in total seven reporters were hit by police. Fortunately, Giuliana has recovered and returned to see. Read more.
A repórter Giuliana Vallone, da TV Folha, foi atingida no olho por uma bala de borracha disparada por policiais militares da Rota (Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar) enquanto cobria o protesto contra o aumento das tarifas em São Paulo em junho do ano passado. Ela disse a repórteres que estava em um estacionamento na rua Augusta quando uma viatura da Rota se aproximou em baixa velocidade e um PM que estava no banco de trás atirou contra ela. Segundo a Folha, no total sete repórteres foram atingidos por policiais. Felizmente, Giuliana se recuperou e voltou a enxergar. Leia mais.

Photographer Yasuyoshi Chiba
Prized for its news coverage around the world, born in Japan, Chiba chose Brazil to live and work. On July 22, 2013, in Rio de Janeiro, after taking this photo of police officers being hit by a Molotov cocktail thrown by an undercover cop among the protesters, Chiba was cravenly attacked while was photographing the aggression of a police officer to a protester fallen on the street.
“I saw a protester falls to the ground. Cops grabbed him and took him. I was taking photos when I was suddenly pushed by other officers. So I raised my arms with my camera to show that I was a photographer and had peaceful intentions but a cop in uniform and shield hit me in the head with his truncheon”, he said. Read more.
Premiado por suas coberturas ao redor do planeta, nascido no Japão, o fotógrafo Yasuyoshi Chiba escolheu o Brasil para morar e trabalhar. Após tirar essa foto de policiais militares sendo atingidos por um coquetel Molotov atirado por um policial infiltrado entre os manifestantes, Chiba foi covardemente agredido enquanto fotografava a agressão de um policial militar a um manifestante caído na rua:
“Vi um manifestante cair no chão. Os policiais o agarraram e o levaram. Fotografava a cena quando fui bruscamente empurrado por outros policiais. Então levantei os braços com minha câmera para mostrar que era fotógrafo e que tinha intenções pacíficas, mas um policial de uniforme e escudo me acertou a cabeça com o cassetete”, revelou.
